You may have heard the analogy that being in the cannabis industry is like being on a rollercoaster. I’m here to certify that analogy is indeed true! One day you feel on top of the world with a new opportunity or achievement in front of you, the next day you find yourself miles away from that euphoria, surrounded by seemingly insurmountable barriers.
By law, in Michigan, we’re each allowed to have up to 10 ounces of cannabis in our house at any given time. And if you’re lucky enough to have 10 ounces of flower, you need to make sure it’s stored to maintain maximum potency and freshness.
The summer has been flying by at Pharmhouse Wellness, and we’ve been busy next door, too, continuing construction on the grow facility. Every grow I’ve had before this was a DIY experiment. You’ll be glad to know this is different—so much planning and thought have gone into this project.
As you know, there are many strains of cannabis flower—we carry about 70+ kinds of cannabis from cultivators across Michigan. With so many strains to choose from, how do you get started? If you’ve never purchased flower before, or just don’t think you’re choosing the right products, we can help. Here are some things to consider.
You’ve stumbled upon the first entry in my GRow journal. I decided to write this as a documentary of sorts about the journey I’ve been on in the cannabis industry. From the Grand Rapids Lottery for Special Land Use Permits to opening a cannabis business in a pandemic, and now coming out the other side, we are on the verge of expanding our small but GRowing company—with a cannabis cultivation facility. So let’s get caught up on what’s happening around the GRow!
Just like juicy strawberries in June, breathtaking Lake Michigan sunsets and campfires with fireflies—there are some cannabis strains that pair up best with the summer months.
We believe cannabis social equity is more than a plan or a checkbox—for us it is a deeply held company value.
There are so many options to consider when buying cannabis flower, and if you’ve reviewed our cannabis menu—you know there are so many choices, and making an informed decision isn’t always easy. The distinction between medical and recreational cannabis is an important one when you’re looking to make a purchase. But the bigger question is why is there even a difference in the first place now that both are legal? And what is the difference, really?

Recreational marijuana is legal in eleven states and Washington, D.C. Michigan was the tenth state to legalize marijuana for adult use. As the plant becomes legalized across the U.S., the questions surrounding how it clashes with the war on drugs have come to the forefront of social justice issues.
So, can cannabis provisioning centers benefit your community?
Yes! Here’s how: like anything else in life, cannabis is taxed. The better a provisioning center does, the more tax revenue the state and local community will see. Medical cannabis is taxed at Michigan’s standard 6%, while recreational cannabis is taxed an extra 10% on top of the standard 6% tax rate. This money goes to improving schools, roads, and other various things that benefit from tax dollars.
